Once I Saw a Little Bird

Once I saw a little bird
going hop, hop, hop.
And I said , “Little bird,
will you stop, stop, stop?”
I was going to the window
to say, “How do you do?”
But he shook his little tail
and away he flew.

But for a woodpecker
Tapping at a post, no sound
At all in the house
— Matsuo Basho

Now close the windows and hush all the fields:
If the trees must, let them silently toss;
No bird is singing now, and if there is,
Be it my loss.
It will be long ere the marshes resume,
It will be long ere the earliest bird:
So close the windows and not hear the wind,
But see all wind-stirred.
